It seems like everything is trying to integrate AI these days. Sometimes, you can look around and be like, “Why do I need help from an AI assistant with that?” You may think advanced technology like this is still a way off from being useful to you. But plenty of people use it right now and it can be very successful.
Whether you’re asking NotebookLM to come up with an itinerary for you by uploading a bunch of source material for it or leaning on Microsoft Copilot to create a logo for small business, there’s a lot you can do with AI, and Spotify is getting in on the game with a new AI feature that is actually pretty useful. Now you can ask ChatGPT to help you come up with Spotify playlists. I had to test this out and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to do. Now I can take the pain of going through hundreds of songs to find the right ones for my mood.

Connect your Spotify and your ChatGPT
It’s an easy integration
From Spotify: “Spotify will not share music, podcasts, or any other audio or video content on our platform with OpenAI for training purposes.”
If you want to start using ChatGPT to help you create a more customized Spotify experience, it starts with ChatGPT. You don’t need to have a paid subscription to ChatGPT, but you do have to at least have a free account that you’re logged into. Either log in or create an account with ChatGPT to open up the LLM. From there, you can type in any prompt as long as it includes the word Spotify in it.
Once you do that, ChatGPT will ask you to sign in to your Spotify account. If you have a Premium version of Spotify, you’ll be able to integrate these two. If they are linked together, you’ll be able to then ask ChatGPT to help you customize your Spotify experience.
I first wanted some help with moods
Why not ask ChatGPT to search for you?
Now that I had the superpower of the Internet behind me, I figured I’d put it to good use. Rather than typing into Google and having to read a bunch of posted stories or searching through playlist after playlist on Spotify, I could create my own playlists with some help from ChatGPT. I asked it to help me find ambient mood music. This is the kind of music that I like to listen to while I’m writing, as anything with words will entice me to sing along.
If they are linked together, you’ll be able to then ask ChatGPT to help you customize your Spotify experience.
ChatGPT asked me a number of clarifying questions like exactly what kind of vibe I was looking for. Was I looking for relaxing music to fall asleep to? Did I want musical scores? Was I more interested in nature sounds? I could specify exactly what kind of audio I was looking for and ChatGPT would create the playlist. This wasn’t even the best part though.
ChatGPT saves your playlists to Spotify for you
You don’t have to take the answer and create it yourself
Once you have your answers narrowed down enough that ChatGPT feels comfortable creating for you, it will come up with a playlist and populate it among your prompts. What’s fantastic is that it will give you the track lists that it compiled and each of them will have a direct link to the song on Spotify. By clicking one of the tracks, it opens up Spotify and shows you that it actually created an entire playlist and saved it to your account for you.
For me, this was clutch. Not only was it giving you the answers you were seeking, but it eliminated the need for me to take that info and input it myself into the service. Of course, with Spotify’s controls, I can edit the playlist how I see fit. For example, if I don’t care for one of the songs that ChatGPT recommended, I can just delete it from the playlist within the Spotify app.
It doesn’t just give you a few songs either
This can be used in a lot of different ways
When you’re asking ChatGPT to come up with a playlist for you, it chooses between 25–30 songs on average as the playlist. I love this because, when I’m making playlists, I’m always looking for ones that are well over an hour long. I want variety in my songs and if I’m getting a playlist that’s 8–10 songs, I’m not getting that. I asked it to come up with a playlist of the best one-hit wonders from the 1980s, and it made a two-hour-long, 30-song playlist that had me jamming out as soon as I opened my Spotify app.
But it doesn’t only work for songs. You can ask ChatGPT about podcasts and audiobooks. I asked it to come up with 10 different parenting podcasts, and it linked to 10 different episodes with links to all of them. You can be more specific and ask for them to be different shows or a certain length. ChatGPT lets you set the parameters of the audio you’re working with in Spotify. I’m excited to continue working with the LLM and creating new playlists. I get tired of trying to find new music sometimes. Giving out the work feels good, as I can do more listening than thinking.
