Prime Video does this feature better than YouTube TV

I have long been a proponent of being able to multitask when you’re watching TV. I’m absolutely not good at multitasking when watching a movie or a scripted drama that needs all of my attention. Imagine trying to do work while watching Breaking Bad or Memento. You’d be lost and not sure what’s going on, forcing you to either not go back and find out or have to rewind multiple times. But, when it comes to watching some light and breezy or sports, I definitely think it’s possible to keep your eyes on more than one thing.

I recently had a situation where I was trying to watch two things at once and, because I had cable, I wasn’t able to do so. I had to produce a workaround where I used the Samsung Multiview option and cast my laptop to one side of the TV and use cable on the other side, basically creating a makeshift picture-in-picture option. This was a giant pain and I swore to not do it again because it wasn’t worth the hassle. It’s what made me switch to YouTube TV. While this wasn’t the only reason that I made the move, YouTube TV’s Multiview option was a perk that I definitely considered.

Now that the NBA season has tipped off, the league has new broadcasting partners in Amazon and NBC. Prime Video is now a destination for NBA games and Amazon has made a massive push to provide a better viewing experience for fans. In fact, the Multivew option I love so much from YouTube TV now pales in comparison to what Prime Video is offering.

Multiview takes on an entirely new meaning

You can customize what you want your TV to look like

Choosing Multiview on Prime Video for NBA League Pass games.

This version of Multiview is only available to fans who subscribe to NBA League Pass.

The feature that everyone loves about watching sports on YouTube TV is Multiview, which lets you watch four games at one time. It’s ideal for college football or basketball season because there are often a ton of games going on at one time, and you don’t need to pick which one game you want to watch. It is one of the most frustrating parts about cable, considering the ability to do picture-in-picture has been long gone. But YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream both offer Multiview, where you can watch multiple games at once.

For the NBA season, Prime Video now offers its own version of Multiview as well. In my opinion, it’s the best of the versions too. That’s because you have full control over how your Multiview looks. While the other services have a quad box grid layout with four boxes all the same size, Prime Video puts you in charge of which game you want to watch the most. You get to choose which of the games you’re watching can be the largest, meaning you get to deem which box gets more prominence on your screen. To have four games up, you can have one main game taking up two-thirds of the screen and then three games split between the final third. This works for smartphones, smart TVs, tablets and computers, so you don’t only have to do this on your TV screen.

Prime Video has added in sports gambling

Keep track of your picks while watching

An NBA game on with the chance to check bets through Fanduel.

Fans can link their Prime Video account to their Fanduel account to keep tabs on their sports bets live. Rather than having to open Fanduel on your phone or computer and keep an eye on the games on another screen, your bets populate on the screen itself. You can keep that up on your screen while you’re watching a game, and it updates in real time, showing you any wins and losses as well as the progress you have toward a bet.

It is important to know that you can’t place bets from Prime Video, so you will still need to go onto Fanduel to do that. What is really impressive about this feature is that it will update the probability you have of hitting your bet as the game goes on. If you see the probability dropping, you might be able to cash out in time to save some money before it’s completely lost on the bet. You can also open up the Odds View, which gives you live feeds and lines as a larger part of the display. This also gives you some context into how a game is playing out, if you aren’t watching that game, to help you decide on whether you want to place a new bet or not.

Key Moments help you get caught up quicker

Watch the best plays of the game

A TV showing current stats from an NBA game on Prime Video.

Let’s say you want a summary of the game provided by AI. Key Moments does that in real time. Not only does it give you a play-by-play recap of the action and provide you with stats for the players that were involved, but it can recognize when a big moment in the game happens and flag it. A Key Moment icon will pop up next to that play, allowing you to go back and watch the highlight. This can be a momentum-shifting three-pointer or a steal and a dunk that sends the crowd roaring.

Rather than having to open Fanduel on your phone or computer and keep an eye on the games on another screen, your bets populate on the screen itself.

Going with Key Moments is Rapid Recap, which can really help fans who might not have watched the game from the beginning. When you switch into a game, you’ll have the option of watching a short, two-minute recap of what has happened up to that point in the action. Basically, Rapid Recap uses the Key Moments to put together a highlight reel of all the biggest plays of the game up to where you joined.

More reasons why Prime Video trumps YouTube TV for watching games

Buy what you want to wear to support your team

Prime Video NBA games on a laptop.

As you’re watching a game, you may see someone courtside rocking a sweet jersey that you are very interested in owning. You don’t even have to leave the game that you’re watching to look up the gear. You can just hit the Up button on your remote and be brought to the shop to search for items. This populates in a small portion of the window, keeping you in on the action while searching for some apparel.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) powers the stats during the game and makes them easier to find as the game is happening. You don’t have to leave the game feed to be able to see real-time stats. You just have to move over to that icon and clicking it brings the stats onto the screen as you watch the game. You get both team and individual stats, helping you keep an eye on trends, which you can potentially use with a Fanduel bet later on. These are just some of the Prime Video advantages to watching the NBA this season and will be for the next 11 years while its partnership with the league runs. It will be interesting to see how the viewing experience evolves over the years.
