Everyone has those days at work when they’d rather be left alone to focus without unnecessary distractions or their boss bothering them. However, it seems Microsoft has decided to make it harder for you to have a peaceful day in the office, and it’s all thanks to an upcoming update to Microsoft Teams.
In its Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the tech giant has revealed that it is working on a new feature for Microsoft Teams that will automatically update your location in Teams whenever you connect to your organization’s Wi-Fi.
“When users connect to their organization’s Wi-Fi, Teams will soon be able to automatically update their work location to reflect the building they’re working from,” Microsoft explains in its roadmap.
So this means that if co-workers are trying to find each other, it should make it much easier, but on the flip side, if you’re trying to hide in a corner in the office one day to get some work done without distractions, that sounds like it’s about to become much harder.
The feature will not be enabled by default
It’s still in development, and could launch before the end of the year
Thankfully, the two silver linings of this feature are that it isn’t enabled by default, so when it launches, your organization will actually have to decide to enable it, and it also requires end-users to opt in. Meaning, if you don’t consent to it, your location won’t be tracked when you’re connected to your company’s Wi-Fi.
According to its roadmap, Microsoft lists the feature as “in development” with a rollout start date of December 2025, meaning companies could start using it by the end of the year. The feature will only be available on desktop and Mac, so you won’t have to worry about your company tracking you from the Teams app on your phone.
Microsoft also says the feature will be available worldwide, but beyond everything I’ve mentioned, it doesn’t go into much detail about exactly how the feature will work or look on Teams, or the advantages or disadvantages it could have for companies.
This isn’t the first Microsoft Teams feature to raise eyebrows. Earlier this year, Microsoft partnered with Mercedes-Benz to integrate its Meetings for Teams app into the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA, making it easier to attend work meetings while you’re driving — something I’m not sure many people are eager to do.
